Empress Trash's creative journey began when she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting, drawing, and animation/design in 2014. This foundational education instilled in her a deep appreciation for the traditional arts, which would later intertwine with her digital explorations. Seeking new horizons, she embarked on a transformative adventure, making her way to the Bay Area, where she would be enveloped in a dynamic arts community.
Why Empress Trash?
In an exclusive interview, she revealed the origin of her artistic name.
"I was living in Oakland," Empresstrash recounted, "and I was running shows out of my house — art shows, music shows, fundraisers, and stuff."
Adjacent to her residence, people frequently dumped their trash, taking advantage of the proximity to the nearby freeway.
She would venture out to pick through the trash, collecting anything that caught her eye. Returning to her creative sanctuary, she would ingeniously transform these castaways into art pieces. As this practice became more integral to her artistic process, she began identifying herself as either "trash empress" or "empress trash".
The two terms would interchangeably define her identity as an artist.
It wasn't until she found herself at the intersection of her artistic journey and the rise of NFTs that she was confronted with the decision to solidify her chosen name. She recalled, "A few months into crypto, someone asked me, 'Well, which is it? Empress Trash or Trash Empress?'" This inquiry propelled her to make a definitive choice, leading to the birth of her artistic persona—Empresstrash, with the name deliberately chosen to emphasize her connection to the discarded and the transformative power of art.
